UF in the Dominican Republic
UF in the Dominican Republic is UF’s first and longest-running international service learning program, and our most intensive and least expensive 6-week immersion experience in a Spanish-speaking country!
In 2019 we will continue to offer service placement placements in medical and dental clinics, physical and occupational therapy, nutrition, and with Acción Callejera, which does intervention work with street children, prevention work in the communities those children come from, and advocacy and education around the trafficking of children and other abuses of the rights of children. Working with Acción Callejera offers you an opportunity to be creative, design lessons, work with kids, help with literacy work, become more patient and flexible, and get a lot of hugs from kids.
"It’s been an incredible 6 weeks here in the Dominican Republic. I worked with kids who challenged me in ways I could have never anticipated. I thought I wanted to be a psychologist before I came here but now I’m thinking that maybe I should be a teacher or continue to work with nonprofit organizations to improve poorer communities. During this experience, I learnt that I am more patient that I ever knew. I am so pleased with my newly acquired Spanish skills and I am very confident in my ability to adapt to a new environment with ease." A. C.
"I have never felt so humbled before and never have I experienced so much personal growth in such little time. The people here have showed me that there is so much to be happy about and that your life is not measured by the luxuries that you have." V.C.
